Pioneering

A 2 track indie pop single (6m 58s) — released June 28th 2010 on Josaka

After years of toiling away under the moniker of The Wookies, five guys from Berkshire felt it was time for a change. Once a mish-mash of folk-pop psych-rock, the quintet have emerged from their makeover with beards freshly-trimmed and hair slightly neater. Their fuzzy woodland singalongs have been shunned along with their Lucas-loving ex-name in favour of a colder, more jagged exterior. These are Golden Hours, and this is their debut single. First up, 'Pioneering', a slick slice of electro-tinged angular indie; the frosty exterior of Interpol warmed over a pile of burning Mystery Jets CDs. Staccato chanted vocals are riddled through with sprawling keys compressed into a tight bundle which is all said and done within three minutes. Which leaves 'Wash The Night Eyes' to round things off, albeit in an entirely different way to how it all starts - a thudding here, a pounding there, slowly giving rise to a stomping blur of frustration looping off into space. Quivering lead vocals from talisman-drummer Alex are like a West Berkshire Isaac Brock singing hooks from the Oxford English Dictionary- punchy but definitive. The bands last EP as The Wookies picked up airplay from Steve Lamacq and Stuart Maconie as well as a string of critical praise... "Offbeat, old English, psychedelic, poetic, enchanting and noisy all at once: A New Sound is born?" - Bearded "The very fact that they can be compared favourably to a band like Muse demonstrates their accomplishment" - Americana UK "Broken Tail may have just uncovered another gem here… Superb musicianship" - Tasty "Maybe a bit too wilfully eccentric, but for all my journalistic pedantry, I kept listening. They definitely have something" - Incendiary Magazine "Chants.. total wig-outs and a general psychedelic groove… something new at every turn" - The Mag
